Emu Oil as a Treatment for Acne

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by superficial skin eruptions caused by plugging of the pores. Acne can occur on any part of the body, although the face and shoulders are the most common locations.

Causes of Acne
The most common cause of acne is hormonal changes during puberty and during the menstrual cycle. During puberty, an increase in male sex hormones called androgens cause the follicular glands to grow larger and make more sebum. The sebum mixes with common skin bacteria (propionibacterium acnes) and dead skin cells that have been shed from the lining of the follicle. While this process is normal, the presence of extra sebum in the follicle increases the chances of clogging — and cause acne. These changes cause most adolescents, both male and female, to experience some form of acne, ranging from very mild to moderate. However, in some cases the acne can be quite severe, resulting in permanent scaring of the skin. Other possible causes:

  • Heredity - acne is known to be partly hereditary
  • Use of anabolic steroids.
  • Exposure to certain chemical compounds such as dioxins
  • Chronic use of amphetamines or other similar drugs

Acne problems disappear for most people when they reach adulthood and hormone levels begin to regulate again. For others, they have acne into adulthood but for a small minority, it never goes away.

Treatment for Acne
Widely available topical bactericidal products containing benzoyl peroxide may be used in mild to moderate acne.
Prescription topical and oral antibiotics (tetracycline, erythromycin) can help. In females, acne can be improved with hormonal treatments.
Topical or oral retinoids (Vitamin A).
Sulfur formulations are effective both as a micro-exfoliant and as a mild antiseptic.

Although curing acne is extremely difficult, there are some simple home remedies for acne that may help:

  • Use a mild soap and warm water (not hot - it can further irritate the skin) to gently cleanse the affected areas and to remove all dirt and make-up. Do this at least once a day and always after exercising. Using a clean washcloth each time will prevent a bacterial infection.
  • Use caution when choosing a topical astringent. Astringents can help remove excess oil, but some can be irritating and dry your skin, further irritating it.
  • Do not squeeze, scratch, or pick at the lesions (no matter how tempting it is!). Scarring, as well as a secondary infection, can result.
  • Use only gentle, non-comedogenic beauty products such as Emu Oil. Many other products can aggravate acne and irritate your skin further.
